One other piece of "problematic" writing/reading is Marilyn May Lombardi's "The Closet of Breath", an article about Elizabeth Bishop. While it does sparkle with several intriguing ideas, its main argument is difficult to embrace. Lombardi traces Bishop's poetry back to the poet's illnesses. Asthma, eczema, food poisoning seem to account for a range of the poet's conceptualisations and metaphors. I truly don't know what to think. I'm puzzled. Literary criticism can get veeeery strange. Any other examples? Or suggestions on how to expand my strategies of reading?
